A BOSTON CLASSICAL SALON
Friday, June 8, 7:30 pm
Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center, Connecticut College

This fascinating program of music that would have been heard in a Boston salon during the first few decades of the nineteenth century will be performed by a small string ensemble, flute, and fortepiano (played by CEMF favorite Ian Watson). It includes works by Beethoven, Dragonetti, Mozart, Reinagle, and Taylor.

Music from the Cathedrals of Bogotá, Lima, and Quito
Saturday, June 9, 7:30 pm
Christ the King Church, Old Lyme

Spanish colonizers imported their traditions of worship and music, building astounding cathedrals and bringing music by Spanish composers such as Victoria and Guerrero. But they also composed new settings of sacred verse in indigenous languages like Quichua and taught native musicians composition. This program juxtaposes a cappella late-Renaissance liturgical music with Baroque villancicos designed to appeal to new converts.http://www.ensembleorigo.orgshapeimage_2_link_0

LEVANTERA
Medieval Music of the Mediterranean, Balkans, and Middle East
Sunday, June 17, 4:00 pm
Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center, Connecticut College

“Levantera” is the name of a strong, east wind of the Mediterranean. In that spirit, this program travels eastward through the Balkans, Armenia, and the Middle East, exploring the origins of early song. New York-based East of the River is directed by recorder virtuosos Nina Stern and Daphna Mor.

A JOURNEY THROUGH ANCIENT SCRIPTURE
Baroque Settings of the Old Testament in Northern Europe
Friday, June 22, 7:30 pm
Harkness Chapel, Connecticut College

The Spanish ensemble Le Tendre Amour performs an evocative program of striking contrasts — works based on Old Testament texts by both Christian and Jewish composers, including Jacquet de la Guerre’s lush sacred cantatas for the French court and the galant works of Christian Joseph Lidarti commissioned by
Holland’s transplanted Spanish-Portuguese Jews. http://www.letendreamour.comshapeimage_5_link_0
